Job Descriptions

‘Does this job [or do these jobs] really need to be filled?’

Very often an organisation will go out to recruit someone based on what was previously being done in the role – without thinking of how the demands and responsibilities may need to change.

Professional managers need to stop and think!

They should consider

The scope and dimension of the role – the responsibility for

  • People
  • Resources
  • Technology
  • Budgets

Lines of reporting / accountability – i.e. how the person will manage and be managed
setting objectives for the achievement of goals and targets how the function has changed or may change in future

They need to understand the current and potential demands of the role future organisational plans

Only by thorough preparation can you ensure that the job description [and hence the person specification] are both appropriate and current to the role.
