Selection Criteria – Avoiding Discrimination

Having well written job profiles and person specifications is important – but it is not enough . . . . .

Remember there are pitfalls and potential problems

Recruitment is about discriminating – but doing so fairly and within specified selection criteria. Criteria that are measurable and quantifiable.

It is easy for people to recognise and guard against direct discrimination. But in today’s business world indirect discrimination is less easily identified – until it is too late . . .

Direct and indirect discrimination – Have you got fair and transparent strategies for dealing professionally with applicants?

For example how do you address issues such as the following-

  • Pregnancy
  • Sex or gender orientation issues
  • Religion or race
  • Age-ism?

Appreciate the costs and impact on headcount; payroll; advertising budgets; management time of getting it wrong . . . .
